Dale's take on Arizona

Storage fees outran the sailing for a lot of Arizona owners. Around Chandler and Gilbert I see the same pattern: the mast comes down for the move into storage, not for a storm, and it never gets stepped again. A few seasons of that and what's left is a hull nobody wants to register.

Sailboat disposal out here is mostly driveway and storage-lot pickups, and my crew handles it start to finish. We drop the rig, pull the keel and credit its scrap value against the bill, then cut the hull at our yard. On the rare boat near water, we coordinate the pickup with the marina, and missing paperwork never slows this down.

How much does sailboat disposal cost in Arizona?

Arizona, starting at$600+Lead keel scrap $0.40–$0.80/lb credited back.

Sailboat disposal in Arizona starts at $600. The final number depends on vessel length, keel type, and whether the boat sits in a marina slip or on the hard. The keel is the biggest variable: lead recovers roughly $0.40 to $0.80 per pound at scrap, and that credit comes off your price. An iron keel brings less. The mast and standing rigging go to metal recycling the same way.

You send photos, you get one firm number, and that number covers rig-down through disposal. Nobody has heard a different price at the curb.

Local read — Arizona

In Arizona the number comes down mostly to haul distance and how the boat has been stored, since water pulls are rare here and almost everything starts in a driveway, barn, or storage lot. Long hauls to our yard are common given how spread out the state is, and spring cleanouts keep the schedule busy before it settles into a steady pace. Send photos of the boat and rig, the hull length, and where it currently sits.

How we dispose of a sailboat

The rig comes down first. Mast unstepped, standing rigging cut away or salvaged, spreaders and boom stacked and strapped. Then the keel: unbolted or cut out at our yard, weighed, and sold to the metal recycler, with the value credited back to you. What is left is a fiberglass hull, and that gets cut down and routed to a processor the same way we handle any hull.

If the boat is still in the water, we run the haul-out: crane time, slip coordination, the conversation with the marina office. You do not call the crane company, and you do not manage three vendors to lose one boat. Boats on stands, in cradles, or buried behind a garage on a dead trailer load the same day the rig comes down.

Honest take

What about donating the sailboat?

Donation is real, and for the right boat it is the best deal going: free pickup and a tax receipt. Here is the part the ads skip. Charities sell donated boats to fund their work, so they want boats a buyer would pay for, and the survey is where most old sailboats fall out.

If a boat sat for ten years with soft decks and a seized diesel, the charity does not want it either. Send photos anyway. If yours has donation value, I will tell you to donate it, because you will hear it from the surveyor eventually and I would rather you hear it from me first.

Getting rid of an old sailboat: what we take

Trailer sailers, day sailers, full keelboats, race boats long past racing, and the half-finished restoration where the ambition ran out before the deck core did. Mast standing or already down, sails rotted or still worth something, it all loads.

Winches, hardware, and usable sails get salvaged, and anything with resale value is spoken for before the hull is cut. A powerboat hull without a rig belongs with Arizona fiberglass boat disposal. A sailboat that still sails and just needs to move to a new owner or a new marina is a transport job: Arizona boat hauling.

Sailboat disposal in Arizona: what owners ask

How much does it cost to get rid of a sailboat in Arizona?
Arizona pricing falls within the range in the pricing section above, and what moves it is mostly location and access. A boat parked deep in a barn costs more to reach than one sitting at the curb in Chandler or Gilbert. Send me photos and details on where it sits and I will get you a firm number quickly.
Can you take a sailboat straight out of a marina slip?
We rarely see this in Arizona since most boats here sit on trailers rather than in slips, but when one does, yes, we run the haul-out and the crane time ourselves. You are not left coordinating between a marina and a hauling crew. We handle that conversation directly and keep you out of the middle of it.
Is the lead keel worth anything?
A lead keel carries real scrap weight, and that value gets credited against your price once we pull it. Iron keels, common on some older boats, weigh out for less at the scale but still count for something. Either way, the credit comes off what you owe, not the other way around.
Should I just donate the sailboat instead?
For a boat with real value left in it, donation is usually the better deal, and I will tell you that straight. Charities need boats they can resell, so a project boat with a soft deck or a cracked hull usually fails their survey. Send photos and I will tell you honestly where yours lands.
What happens to the mast, rigging, and sails?
Once the mast and rigging come off, they go straight into metal recycling. Sails, winches, and hardware with any life left in them get pulled and salvaged, and anything with resale value gets credited against your price. What's left after that, the worn line and dead canvas, goes out with the rest of the teardown.
Do I need a title to dispose of a sailboat in Arizona?
Arizona's titling rules are unusual, and the legal section on our Arizona boat removal page covers exactly how that works. From the removal side, what matters is that missing paperwork never holds up a pickup. We have taken plenty of boats with no title in hand and sorted it out on our end.
What if the boat has been sitting on stands for years?
That is most of what we deal with here: a dead trailer, seized fittings, wood gone soft in the corners after years outdoors. None of that stops the job. My quote already accounts for a boat that has been sitting a while, so there is nothing extra waiting for us on pickup day.
