Sunken Sailboat Recovery in North Miami

Before it sank, keel bolts weeping rust down the hull had given this 25 ft O'Day 25 sailboat away. Over time, the keel joint let water in, and one weekend the boat went down at a lake dock until only the cabin roof showed. The dock was the only reason it stayed in shallow water.
The obstacle was the keel. A leaking keel joint means water keeps coming in even after the hull floats, and the heavy keel resists every pound of lift. We set lift bags under the keel section and at the bow, lifted slowly, and ran a pump the whole way up to keep the hull from refilling.
The sunken boat recovery took about five hours on site. Then we towed the O'Day to a ramp near Tamiami. Keel bolts and the joint behind them would cost more than the boat was worth, so it went to our yard for dismantling and recycling. The lead keel was set aside for salvage.

Crews cover Miami-Dade County: Tamiami, Coral Terrace, South Miami Heights, Homestead, The Hammocks, and West Little River. When a boat goes under in North Miami or anywhere nearby, we schedule the recovery the same week once we have photos and a rough depth. The longer a boat stays under, the worse it usually gets, and the fuel, the oil, and the weather all make it harder, and a quick call with photos is the fastest way to a crew.
