Half the boat was still above the waterline when we got the call, which counted as good news. A storm surge had pushed water up over the transom of this Donzi faster than the bilge pump could clear it, and by the time the owner walked down to the dock the next morning, the stern had settled well below the surface while the bow stayed up at an odd angle. Neighbors along the dock had already started asking questions about fuel in the water before the owner even got there. Raising it meant getting flotation bags positioned under the stern without stirring up more sediment or spreading whatever had leaked, careful, slow work in murky water. Once we had it floating level again, we pumped it dry at the dock and winched it straight onto the trailer. No fuel sheen by the time we left, and the neighbors stopped asking questions.
