Wekiwa Springs, FL: 27 ft Cal 27 Off the Bottom in One Morning

The boom was missing and the mast corroded at the step on the 27 ft Cal 27, though the owner swore the hull was solid. She sat on a mooring with the gunwales level with the water after a steady week of rain. The cabin was dry above the berths, which told us the leak was low.
Depth was not the issue. The obstacle was the mast. Corroded at the step, it could have folded under strain. The crew lashed it to the cabin top before any lift, then rigged lift bags under the keel and gunwales. She floated up straight and stayed that way.
A short tow took her to the ramp, where we loaded her. Cal 27s hold their value, and this one had a clean hull. A repair yard near Longwood took her for a new mast step and rig. About three hours of sunken boat recovery on site, and salvage here sent a good boat back to a new owner.
