Westwood Lakes, FL: 22 ft Catalina 22 Off the Bottom in One Morning

For years the 22 ft Catalina 22 had its mast down and lashed to the deck. It sat by the water, took a squall through the cockpit, and slid into the shallows at a public boat ramp until the gunwales were level with the surface.
The obstacle was the ramp schedule. The ramp is public, and we had a few hours of early quiet before fishing boats began to queue. We rigged slings, fitted lift bags under the gunwales, and the crew bailed the cockpit as the hull rose. With the mast already lashed, there was nothing tall to snag.
We finished in about four hours, and the tow up the ramp took ten minutes. The hull was solid and the keel intact, and the owner wanted it back on the water, so we trucked it to a repair yard near Country Club for a new rig. That is sunken boat recovery we like best: a boat that gets another season and a true salvage.

Crews cover Miami-Dade County: Brownsville, Coral Terrace, Country Club, and Country Walk. Should a boat end up on the bottom in any of them, we have a crew picked inside seven days: a few photos and the water depth get us started, and the lift bags and tow follow as soon as we can reach the water. The work seldom stretches past the day it begins.
