South Dakota only titles a large boat: anything longer than 12 feet, or any motorized boat, excluding canoes, inflatables, kayaks, sailboards, and seaplanes. Smaller non-motorized boats need neither title nor registration.
A seller has 45 days to hand over a reassigned title; the buyer titles it in their own name. A bill of sale with year, make, model, HIN, date, price, and signatures fills any gaps. Bonded title does not apply. A lost title replaces for $10. A nonresident gets a nonnegotiable interstate title from the county treasurer, good only for South Dakota's annual registration. With no records at all, use a Succession Affidavit or Affidavit of Value, filed through your county of residence.
South Dakota has no dedicated boat program, but a 2025 law folded boats into the state's general abandoned motor vehicle statute, so an abandoned boat now goes through the same removal agency system used for cars.
If the boat is not yours. Under SDCL 32-36-4.1, a removal agency cannot touch a boat on private property without your written permission. Once you give it and the agency removes the boat, and nobody reclaims it within 30 days of notice, the right transfers to the removal agency, which then gets title. It works, but you rely on the agency to run that process. Skipping it, removal is faster.
