Hialeah Gardens, FL: 27 ft Chris-Craft Commander 27 Off the Bottom in One Morning

Every time someone tried to sell the 27 ft Chris-Craft Commander 27, the buyer caught a fuel smell and walked. Eventually she sank at a public ramp with the gunwales level with the water, and the smell got worse.
Fuel was the obstacle. Old gasoline and a damaged tank can turn a ramp into a spill, so before we lifted we laid absorbent boom and pumped the tank by hand into drums. Only then did we strap the hull and bring it up with bags. Bilge water went through a separator, not back into the basin.
The whole job took about four hours. The tank was cracked and the stringers were wet through, so there was no repair worth doing. A trailer tow went toward Homestead to our yard for dismantling and recycling. The salvage was the engine, which still turned over, and the sunken boat removal left the ramp clean for the next launch.
