Chapel Hill, NC: 25 ft O'Day Gone in One Morning

A 25 ft O'Day 25 sailboat had been sitting on wooden stands in a Chapel Hill driveway for three years. Keel bolts were weeping rust down the fiberglass hull, and the owner had finally decided enough was enough. The boat wasn't going anywhere, the trailer was deteriorating underneath it, and the neighbors were getting tired of looking at it. We showed up on a Tuesday morning with a hydraulic trailer and a plan. The mast was already down, which saved time, but the real puzzle was the weight distribution and the soft ground around the stands. We had to work a pair of pneumatic jacks under the hull carefully, one side at a time, to lift it clear without punching through the yard. Once we had clearance, we slid a custom frame underneath and secured everything for the haul back to our yard outside Durham. The whole operation took most of a morning. At the yard, we pulled the keel out and moved the hull to the processor. The fiberglass gets broken down and recycled. The keel, hardware, and what's left of the trailer get sorted and moved to the appropriate recycler. Nothing goes to a landfill.
