Hartford, CT: 28 ft Bertram Gone in One Morning

A 28 ft Bertram 28 sat in a residential yard in Hartford for three years. Twin diesel engines had seized, the cockpit sole had gone soft, and the hull was starting to show the wear that comes from sitting exposed to Connecticut winters. No trailer underneath it, just blocks and patience running out. The real problem wasn't the boat's condition. It was access. The property sat on a tight lot with a narrow driveway and power lines running directly over where a crane would need to swing. We brought in a smaller boom truck, positioned it on the street side, and rigged the lift from there. Took most of a morning to get her off the blocks, secure her, and load her onto the trailer without taking out the fence or the neighbor's shed. No title in the drawer, handled per Connecticut regulations. The Bertram was headed straight to the processor. Two engines that size and a full fiberglass hull meant there was material worth recovering, and that's where it went.
