Size and type

A 14-foot aluminum fishing boat is one job. A 30-foot cabin cruiser is a different one. Length, beam, and weight decide the crew and the equipment.

Where it sits

Driveway on a trailer is the cheapest boat removal there is. On blocks in the backyard takes more work. In a slip, it needs a haul-out. Sunken, it needs recovery.

Condition

Engine already out is cheaper. Fuel still aboard, a hull full of rainwater, a trailer that will not roll: each adds handling.

Louisiana treats titling as optional. Registration is mandatory for motorized and sail boats 12 feet and up, but you only need a title if the boat or a 25-plus horsepower motor is financed, was already titled in another state, is homemade, or has an incorrect HIN.

To hand a boat over, the seller notifies LDWF within 15 days and files an application plus a Bill of Sale of Boat/Motor form with the registration number, HIN, and both signatures. Transfer costs $5. If the chain of ownership from the last registered owner is broken, LDWF may require a court decision first.

Louisiana has no state fund for removing abandoned boats. It does have an Abandoned and Derelict Vessels titling process: a property owner, salvor, or parish official can end up with title by sending a certified letter giving the owner 30 days to redeem it, or, if undelivered, publishing notice for three weeks followed by another 30-day wait.

If the boat is not yours. Louisiana gives a property owner an easier path than most applicants get: you are exempt from the certified-letter requirement others need from a parish official. What is left is still a certified letter to the owner, a 30-day window, and possibly weeks of published notice before title transfers. If you would rather have it gone, removal is the shorter road.
