Kenosha, WI: 23 ft Hunter Gone in One Morning

A 23 ft Hunter 23.5 sailboat had been sitting in a Kenosha County yard for two winters. The water ballast tank cracked during the freeze, and by the time the owner faced what it would cost to repair, the boat had become a fixture he'd rather forget. The original trailer underneath it had rusted through in spots, and the whole rig was wedged between a garage and a fence line that didn't leave much room to maneuver. We showed up on a Tuesday morning. The mast was already down, which saved time, but pulling the keel out meant working the boat back far enough to access the underside. The rusted trailer couldn't support a tow, so we loaded the hull straight onto our heavy-duty deck. Getting it out required backing through a narrow passage toward Pleasant Prairie and angling past the property line. Most of the job was choreography, not heavy lifting. We had it loaded and staged under an hour. At the yard, we pulled the keel, cut the fiberglass hull into manageable sections, and routed the pieces to the processor. Steel fittings and aluminum hardware went to salvage. What couldn't be recycled went to the disposal facility. The trailer stayed behind, dealt with separately.
