A 14-foot aluminum fishing boat is one job. A 30-foot cabin cruiser is a different one. Length, beam, and weight decide the crew and the equipment.

Where it sits

Driveway on a trailer is the cheapest boat removal there is. On blocks in the backyard takes more work. In a slip, it needs a haul-out. Sunken, it needs recovery.

Condition

Engine already out is cheaper. Fuel still aboard, a hull full of rainwater, a trailer that will not roll: each adds handling.

Distance

Miles to the processing yard are part of the quote. Boat hauling cost scales with them.

Wisconsin only titles boats 16 feet and longer. Since February 1, 1989, an owner of a boat that size or bigger must hold a certificate of title. Anything shorter, voluntarily registered, or otherwise exempt is not titled, though registration is required for motorized boats and sailboats over 12 feet.

For a boat 16 feet or longer, the title is required to transfer ownership, and any lien must be released first. The DNR publishes a Buyer's Checklist, Seller's Checklist, and a sample bill of sale to guide the paperwork. Without a title, replacement or a new issuance each costs $5; a used boat 16 feet or longer needs additional documentation.

We could not find a published statewide removal program for Wisconsin. State law does require that an owner notify the Department of Natural Resources within 15 days if a boat is destroyed, abandoned, or junked, but there is no dedicated fund or agency tasked with physically removing one.

If the boat is not yours. Wisconsin has no published procedure that lets a property owner take ownership of a boat someone left behind. What is left is general civil process: track the owner down yourself, and sue for the cost of removal. Most people do not do that for a boat. We can take it without a title.
