Meriden, CT: 22 ft Catalina Gone in One Morning

A 22 ft Catalina 22 sailboat had been sitting in a Meriden yard for years with its mast down and lashed to the deck. The fiberglass hull was sound enough, but the swing-keel trailer had flat tires and hadn't moved in so long the owner had stopped thinking about it as a boat and started thinking about it as yard clutter. The real obstacle wasn't the boat itself. It was getting to it. The trailer sat deep in the yard with limited backing room, and the access gate was narrow enough that we couldn't thread a standard flatbed through without taking down fencing. We brought in a smaller recovery rig, disconnected the trailer, and winched the hull out by hand to open ground. From there, we loaded it on our truck in pieces. Most of a morning, start to finish. Once at our yard, we pulled the swing keel and separated the mast from the deck. The fiberglass hull went to the processor for responsible recycling. The keel and mast were sorted for salvage or scrap. Clean job, clean end.
