Six seasons of Illinois winters had turned the Sea Ray's gelcoat the color of old chalk. The engine quit partway through a lake trip and never got fixed, and once it stopped running, two summers of trying to sell it as a fixer-upper went nowhere. Buyers wanted to hear it turn over before they'd talk numbers, and it never would. The trailer tongue jack had rusted solid in the down position, so hitching it meant jacking the whole assembly up by hand before we could even back the truck into position. Added maybe half an hour to what should've been a quick pull. Once it was loaded we could see water had gotten into the stringers under the deck, soft enough in places that resale wasn't realistic anyway, so the hull went to a fiberglass recycler instead. Driveway's clear, and the owner already has a mower parked where the boat used to sit.
