South Bend, IN: 27 ft Cal Gone in One Morning

A 27 ft Cal 27 had been parked on concrete blocks in a residential yard near Mishawaka for three years. The boom was gone, the mast corroded at the step, and the fiberglass hull was chalky but intact. The owner had bought it thinking he'd restore it. He didn't. The trailer was rusted solid, sitting on jack stands instead of wheels. Getting the boat off those stands and onto a proper hauler frame meant building temporary support, then using airbags to lift the hull just enough to slide the frame underneath without stressing the keel. The whole operation took most of a morning. Once we had it secured, we towed it to our facility in St. Joseph County. At the yard we dropped the keel, which was the only way to fit the hull into the shop for cutting. The mast came out in sections. The fiberglass went to the processor, the metal to recycling. The trailer stayed behind. By the end of the week, the concrete blocks were all that was left. Crews cover all of St. Joseph County: Mishawaka, Granger, Notre Dame, Osceola, Walkerton, New Carlisle.
