A 14-foot aluminum fishing boat is one job. A 30-foot cabin cruiser is a different one. Length, beam, and weight decide the crew and the equipment.

Driveway on a trailer is the cheapest boat removal there is. On blocks in the backyard takes more work. In a slip, it needs a haul-out. Sunken, it needs recovery.

Engine already out is cheaper. Fuel still aboard, a hull full of rainwater, a trailer that will not roll: each adds handling.

Indiana titles almost every boat now. Residents must title within 45 days of buying (60 for new residents); nonresidents whose boat sits in Indiana 60 or more consecutive days a year must too. Older exemptions, for pre-1986 boats, homemade boats, boats under $3,000, and non-motorized sailboats, were removed between 2016 and 2021.

To transfer a boat we need the properly reassigned title. If it was previously exempt from titling, a seller's bill of sale is enough. With no clear ownership, Indiana requires a court order through its Court Order Title Application Packet. Inside a marina, the operator can instead file an Affidavit of Sale for an Abandoned Watercraft (Form 50634) after six months unclaimed.

Indiana has no named removal program. State law bans abandoning a boat on Indiana waters; anything found unattended, sunk, washed up, or drifting counts as abandoned, and DNR officers can seize it, hold it 90 days, then destroy or auction it, with proceeds to the state's Fish and Wildlife Fund.

If the boat is not yours. Outside a marina, Indiana has no statute letting an ordinary property owner take ownership of a boat someone left behind. Ohio grants a landowner clear title after 20 days, Texas after 7; a private Indiana owner gets neither. Most people do not chase a court order over a boat.
