A 14-foot aluminum fishing boat is one job. A 30-foot cabin cruiser is a different one. Length, beam, and weight decide the crew and the equipment.

Where it sits

Driveway on a trailer is the cheapest boat removal there is. On blocks in the backyard takes more work. In a slip, it needs a haul-out. Sunken, it needs recovery.

Condition

Engine already out is cheaper. Fuel still aboard, a hull full of rainwater, a trailer that will not roll: each adds handling.

South Carolina titles vessels widely: every motorized boat, with a short exemption list, plus every outboard motor of 5 horsepower or more, through SCDNR. Smaller or stationary motors are not titled.

Selling a titled vessel without transferring the title, plus a county tax receipt, is illegal. If the title is lost, a notarized bill of sale plus that receipt stands in. Titling and registration together run $20, a motor title $10, a duplicate $5. If the ownership chain cannot be restored, SCDNR can issue an Affidavit in Support for Application for Title by phone request.

Act 22, signed May 8, 2025 and effective immediately, declares abandoned and derelict vessels a public nuisance: abandoned means wrecked or unidentified for 10 or more days after notice, derelict means identified but sitting 21 or more days. Fines reach $10,000 plus up to 60 days in jail, and a pilot vessel turn-in program runs around Charleston.

If the boat is not yours. Section 50-21-260 is unusually direct: a derelict or abandoned vessel can be removed at any time by any person, without liability to the owner, and the remover can recover costs and attorney's fees within 3 years. It works, but you fund the removal and chase reimbursement yourself. If you would rather have it gone now, removal is the shorter road.
